Latin American Training Programme in International Water Law
Within the framework of the Latin American Training Programme in International Water Law, the Central and South America Global Water Partnership (GWP), together with the Universidad Externado of Colombia and other partner organizations , will hold a training workshop on international water law in Bogota, Colombia, on 3 -7 March 2014.
The Programme, which has the academic support of the University of Dundee (Scotland) and of its Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science (under the auspices of UNESCO), aims at promoting international cooperation and facilitating good water governance by strengthening the technical and institutional capacity of those entities and individuals who provide advice to policymakers on legal frameworks for the management of international water resources and support governments in the development of national legal frameworks contributing to water security , sustainable development and peace in Latin America.
The training workshop targets professionals wishing to acquire expertise and a fresh perspective of international law and of its contribution to the improvement of the governance of international water resources in the region. It will focus on the importance of transboundary water resources and of the river basin as management unit within a regional context, on the management of international watercourses and on the effects of climate change. It will provide an overview of the evolution of international water law and will analyze principles, treaties and major conventions on the subject. Case studies will illustrate formal and informal institutional mechanisms for cooperation that may help meet the challenges related to the governance of international water resources in the region.
The workshop is meant for attendance by professionals involved in the management of international water resources in Latin America , ie , water or environment ministry officials, officials of ministries of foreign affairs and of other related ministries, members of parliament and other national institutions responsible for water management.
The deadline for registering for the workshop is 27 January 2014.
